Clay mock-ups for the 1956 Chevy - all from May 1954 - indicate that the taillight design was decided early on. Note that all of these studies feature a large rear wheel opening similar to the 1955 Nomad, but which did not make it to production on the 1956 models, Nomad included.
Four cars (Pics #2, #3, #5 & #9) sport variations of the 1953-54 Bel Air rear fender trim. The side trim in cars Pics #7, #8, #11 & #12 was intended for the '56 Bel Air but actually ended up on the 150 Series. The grille design started out as an exaggerated '55 grille (Pics #7 & #9), but by October 1954 had evolved into the production version (Pics #10 & #12). One grille (Pic #1) actually predicted the '57 front end.
Vertical headlight pods also received serious consideration (Pics #5, #6, #7 & #9).
